THE CANDIDATE
My name is Heidi Shartrand Newell. As a 90s kid who grew up in North Adams I know the joy that this city has brought to my family. My father's family has lived in this city for many decades and I am proud to be raising my own family here!

I attended Greylock Elementary School, Conte Middle School, and graduated from Drury High School. I played youth basketball for the Mr. Tire team. I participated in theatrical productions of Our Town, Little Shop of Horrors, and other short skits with the Drury Drama Team. I lost so much elbow and knee skin when they paved the track around the Joe Wolfe baseball field.

I have had the privilege to live in a place similar to North Adams but in northern Alabama. While I wasn't part of the local government there, I did work in the public schools there, and I learned a great deal from those 5 years.
​
In 2018, my partner and I decided to move back to North Adams. My family bought a home on Church St., and in 2020 I welcomed my first child earthside! Our goal has always been to raise our family here because we truly love this city.
EXPERIENCE
FOR THE JOB
I have worked in various industries over the years but one common thread for each job has been helping people receive care with respect and dignity

In terms of formal education, I have studied psychology and sociology at the collegiate level. I completed a professional certification program for professional photography.
​
I have been employed as a behavioral support specialist, a therapeutic mentor, and a paraprofessional providing accommodation for students in public school settings. I have worked at well-known local places such as Berkshire Family and Individual Resources, The Brien Center, HVES, and Big Y. I coordinated the Saturday morning Community Free Lunch located at First Baptist Church for 2 years, prior to COVID.

Providing excellent service, respectful care, and dignified accommodation has always mattered to me. I will carry these experiences with me, and I will continue to keep learning as I grow.
About The Issues
The campaign will focus on three main policy issues; sustainable economic growth and the impacts of such growth for all community members, identifying ways in which the city can continue to improve its support of the unhomed and homeless community members, and working to implement more accessibility and inclusivity options throughout the city. Shartrand-Newell hopes to build upon what the current city council and local organizations have already established with the intent of refining what exists as well as implementing some things that might be needed to boost the city’s economy and well-being.
